Advent 1, December 1, 2019

Advent... most Christians don't know what to do with it.  Everyone else is making merry, going to parties, decorating the tree, decking the halls...  But, Advent is a season of waiting.  It isn't Christmas.  It is the preparatory, penitential season that precedes Christmas.  The Christmas season in the Church begins on December 25th...the same day the rest of the world is done with it.  What is the Christian to do?

Scripture: Isaiah 2:1-5, Romans 18:8-14; Matthew 24:36-44

It Is Finished?

Pentecost 24, November 24, 2019

This last Sunday of the Church year, goes by a couple of different names; The Sunday of the Fulfillment and/or The Feast of Christ the King.  But, included in the names and in its place at the end of the Church year, the emphasis is sure.  The end is coming, God's promises will be fulfilled, and Christ is the King of kings.  In a world where darkness is winning, we rest in the hope, and in the presence, of our Holy King.

Scripture: Malachi 3:13-18; Colossians 1:13-20; Luke 23:27-43

Preachers of Fear

Pentecost 23, November 17, 2019

We believe so many thing have great power; nature, government, media, presidents.  We trust when we are told that these things will bring doom and destruction.  But, we often fail to realize/remember that our God is the ultimate authority and that He has the final say.  Doomsday Prophets and Preachers of Fear continue to keep us stirred up.  And with that fear comes hate, prejudice, pride, intolerance   and so many other sins that flow out of our sin sick hearts.  Hear the good news.  Be comforted.

Scripture: Malachi 4:1-6; 2 Thessalonians 3:1-13; Luke 21:5-36

Goodbye Cold World

Audio Player Audio PlayerPentecost 22, November 10, 2019

The season of Fall brings about cooler, sometimes cold, weather, darker and shorter days, and leaves behind skeletons that were once lush and vibrant trees.  It is a season that reminds us of the enevitability of THE END.  It happens to the trees and plants, and it will happen to each of us...or will it?  We have hope in the promise of the resurrection.  Our death is not THE END, but is actually a beginning.

Scripture: Exodus 3:1-15; 2 Thessalonians 2:1-8, 13-17; Luke 20:27-40

18th Sunday after Pentecost, October 13, 2019

In France, when the waiter brings your food or fills your cup, you say, "Merci".  Which sounds very much like, 'mercy.'

When ten lepers saw Jesus they yelled, "Jesus, Master, have mercy."

Scripture: Ruth 1:1-19; 2 Timothy 2:1-13;  Luke 17:11-19

An Abiding Reformation

Reformation Day (observed), October 27, 2019
The Reformation was never about Martin Luther. It was all about Jesus.
And, it still is. Luther stood, abiding in God's Word,
against those who wished to skew and oppress the Gospel and God's people.
We, too, stand, abiding in that same Word in world that is hostile to the Gospel and God's people.
Scripture: Revelation 14:6-7;  Romans 3:19-28;  John 8:31-36
